GREENPEACE announced an agreement with Sweden's Ikea Group yesterday that the furnishings retailer will stop buying wood products from ancient forests.

"Our long-term goal is to ensure that all wooden products come from well-managed forests," said Suzanne Pulverer Bergstrand, environmental manager of the Ikea Group. The company aims to phase out the use of wood products from endangered ancient forests by September.

Greenpeace said Ikea's commitment was "a crucial signal to all competitors in the furniture retail business." The environmental group announced the deal in a joint statement with Ikea released at Greenpeace's European office in Brussels.
